Let’s make a sparkly shaker keychain! We roll a piece of holographic plastic into a little tube, close the ends with pretty paper and fill it with sequins, beads, glitter and mini charms. Shake it and watch the glitter and sequins dance inside.

This kawaii DIY shaker charm is light and super cute. Hang it on a backpack or pencil case, give it as a mini gift or a birthday party favour, or start a little collection. It is a great idea for fans of pastel stationery and kawaii crafts.

BEFORE WE START

What you need.

Materials

  • Holographic or star-patterned plastic sheet
  • Coloured or patterned paper
  • Double-sided tape
  • Sequins, beads, glitter and mini charms
  • Eyelet
  • Ball chain or keychain hook
  • Small dangling charm (optional)

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Decorative-edge scissors (optional)
  • Hole punch and eyelet setter

STEP BY STEP

Let’s make it.

  1. 1

    Add tape to one edge

Take the holographic plastic sheet. Stick a strip of double-sided tape along one edge, then peel off the backing.

  2. 2

    Roll it into a tube

Roll the sheet into a tube. Lay the other edge over the tape and press it down so the tube stays closed.

  3. 3

    Flatten the tube

Press the tube flat. Move the taped seam to the back, so the front stays clear and shiny.

  4. 4

    Trim the end

Cut one end of the tube straight, so the paper will sit neatly on it.

  5. 5

    Tape a paper strip

Cut a strip of coloured or patterned paper, a little wider than the tube. Cover the back of the strip with double-sided tape.

  6. 6

    Seal one end with paper

Fold the paper strip over the end of the tube, one half on the front and one half on the back. Press it well so nothing can fall out.

  7. 7

    Make a pretty edge

Trim the sides of the paper so they line up with the tube. Then cut along the outer edge with decorative-edge scissors for a wavy, candy-wrapper look. Normal scissors work too.

    Fill it with sparkle

Now the fun part. Pour in sequins, beads and glitter through the open end.

Add one or two mini charms too. Leave some empty space, so everything can move when you shake it.

    Seal the other end

Trim the open end straight. Close it with a second taped paper strip, just like the first one, and press it well.

Cut the same wavy edge. Now it is a closed shaker tube, and it looks like a sweet in its wrapper.

  10. 10

    Punch a hole

Punch a hole in one paper end, close to the top corner.

  11. 11

    Add a cute eyelet

Pick an eyelet in a colour you like. Push it through the hole and press it closed with the eyelet setter. The eyelet makes the hole strong, so it won’t tear.

  12. 12

    Add the ball chain

Thread the ball chain through the eyelet.

  13. 13

    Hang a little charm

If you like, slide a small dangling charm onto the chain, then close the chain.

    Give it a shake!

THREE LITTLE TIPS

Make it easier.

  • Don’t fill it to the top. The shaking is the best part, so leave room for the sequins to move.
  • Mix sizes. Big sequins, tiny beads and one special charm look best together.
  • Press the tape hard. Run a finger along every taped edge, so no glitter can sneak out.
