BEFORE WE START

What you need.

Materials

  • Coloured paper
  • Glue or tape
  • Shiny or washi tape
  • Stickers (optional)
  • Sweets or small surprises

Tools

  • Paper trimmer or scissors

STEP BY STEP

Let’s make it.

  1. 1

    Cut a square

Cut a square from a sheet of coloured paper, for example 21 × 21 cm (8¼ × 8¼ in) from A4 or US Letter. A paper trimmer gives you a nice straight edge.

  2. 2

Fold the sides to the middle

Fold one side of the square towards the middle. Put glue along its edge.

Fold the other side over it, so the two edges overlap a little. Press along the glue. Now you have a flat tube.

  3. 3

    Close the bottom

Fold the bottom edge up by about 2 cm (¾ in) and crease it well.

Put glue under the strip and press it down, so the bottom of the bag is closed.

  4. 4

    Add shiny tape

Stick a piece of shiny tape over the bottom edge. It keeps the bottom extra strong and looks pretty.

  5. 5

    Open the bag

Open the top of the tube and press the two sides of the opening together the other way, across the bottom seam. The bag gets its pointy pyramid shape.

  6. 6

    Decorate it

Add a sticker or a drawing that matches your party theme.

    Make one for every guest

Make more bags in different colours, with a different sticker on each, so every guest gets their own.

THREE LITTLE TIPS

Make it easier.

  • Pick paper that is not too thin. About 120 g/m² (about 80 lb text) holds sweets without tearing.
  • Match the stickers to the party. Sea animals, unicorns, dinosaurs: one theme makes a lovely set.
  • Add a name. Write each guest’s name on a bag, and it doubles as a place card.
