Let’s make the cutest DIY candy dispenser ever. In this tutorial we turn simple everyday things into a magical mini candy machine inspired by Sanrio characters: Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll and Pochacco.

No fancy tools and no expensive materials. We reuse what we already have at home and make something adorable and useful. And it really works: lift the dome lid, pour in the candies, then slide the drawer to let them fall onto a plate.

It is perfect for creative time at home, a kawaii birthday party, a candy table or a little gift. Make one for each character and you have a mini candy station.

BEFORE WE START

PART 1 OF 3

The machine

  1. 1

Cut the top off the bottle

Cut the top part off a plastic bottle, below the round shoulder. Keep the top with the neck and take off the cap. Turned upside down, this top is the candy jar.

  2. 2

Draw a circle on the cup

Turn the paper cup upside down. Hold the bottle cap in the middle of the bottom and draw around it with a pencil.

  3. 3

    Cut out the circle

Cut along the line with a craft knife and take the paper circle out.

Lifting the cut paper circle out of the bottom of the cup, leaving a round hole
  4. 4

Fit the bottle into the hole

Push the bottle neck down into the hole. The bottle should stand on the cup, neck down.

  5. 5

    Mark the slot

Take the bottle off again. Draw a straight line across the side of the cup, just under the bottom with the hole. This is where the drawer will go in.

  6. 6

    Cut the slot

Cut along the line with a craft knife to make a long, thin slot.

  7. 7

Cut the drawer from a plate

Cut a long tongue shape from the paper plate. Keep a piece of the wavy rim at one end: that is the handle you pull.

    Slide the drawer in

Push the plate strip through the slot so it lies flat right under the hole. Now the hole is closed.

    Cut a little door

Below the drawer handle, draw an arch on the side of the cup, going down to the rim.

    Put the jar on top

Set the bottle back into the hole, neck down. The machine now stands on its own.

Hello Kitty’s face

  1. 11

    Open the capsule

Open a mini plastic capsule. One half is the dome lid that sits on the bottle.

  4. 14

    Add the bow

Put a foam tape square on the back of the bow. It lifts the bow a little off the dome.

  5. 15

    Wrap a red band

Wrap a red paper strip around the top of the cup, where the bottle sits. Glue the end down with a dot of hot glue.

Candy time

  1. 16

    Fill it with candies

Check that the drawer is pushed all the way in. Spoon small candies into the bottle, then put the Hello Kitty dome on top.

  2. 17

    Pull the drawer

Stand the machine on a paper plate. Pull the drawer out a little and the candies roll out of the door onto the plate. Push it back in to stop them.

  3. 18

    Make the whole gang

Make Cinnamoroll with long white ears and a blue band, and Pochacco with floppy black ears and a green band. Fill each one with a different kind of candy.

THREE LITTLE TIPS

Make it easier.

  • Use small candies. They flow easily through the bottle neck. For bigger sweets, use a bottle with a wider opening.
  • Decorate your favourite character. The same machine works for any Sanrio friend. Only the ears, face and band change.
  • Reuse party supplies. Paper cups and plates left over from a party are just right for this.
